Story
Two women with very different lives come together
One struggles to survive after her mother fires her, while the other runs a successful business. I was hesitant to watch Beauty in Black due to Tyler Perry’s inconsistency in creating great content, but I wanted to give it a fair chance by watching it from start to finish.
So I did it
It was full of intrigue, vulgarity, violence, and unexpected twists. If one tried to create a melodrama that combined elements of Empire (at its peak), P-Valley and Dynasty (at its peak), the result would be beauty in black.
The cast is strong and delivers believable performances throughout the series
I struggled with two disappointments: the overuse of the N-word repeatedly exchanged between black characters, and the persistence of negative black stereotypes. Tyler P has a lot of influence and power in Hollywood.
He can do better
It would be refreshing to see him amplify images and voices that are positive to the black community. People (in and out of the black community) take cues from this content and may place greater value on the accuracy of the portrayal because there is a black filmmaker behind the camera.
